For UK installers choosing between Hikvision's K-series AcuSense NVRs. The Hikvision DS-7716NXI and DS-7732NXI share the same K4 chassis, AcuSense AI engine and 4K HDMI output — but they sit at different ends of the small-to-mid commercial site bracket. This guide compares the two K-series models head-to-head on channels, bandwidth, decoding, storage and AI features, and shows where the larger AcuSeek VPro and DeepinMind variants take over when 12MP and 256 Mbps aren't enough. Every spec quoted below is taken from the live Hikvision datasheets and our own configured units in stock at Netview Leicester.
At a glance
DS-7716NXI vs DS-7732NXI in one paragraph. The DS-7716NXI-K4(D) is a 16-channel AcuSense NVR with 160 Mbps incoming bandwidth, four SATA bays and 4K HDMI out. The DS-7732NXI-K4(D) doubles the channel count to 32 and lifts incoming bandwidth to 256 Mbps, retaining the same four SATA bays, AcuSense AI and dual Gigabit LAN topology. Both record up to 12 MP per channel and ship without PoE — power cameras via a PoE switch or PoE injectors. If your site is 1-16 cameras, choose the 7716; 17-32 cameras, move up to the 7732. If you need built-in PoE plus 32 MP recording and AcuSeek text-search AI, step across to the DS-7732NXI-I4/16P/VPRO or the DS-7732NI-M4/24P.
Which model is which? K4 NVR naming decoded
The Hikvision NVR part number tells you channels, generation and connectivity in one string. Reading left to right on a typical Pro Series part:
- DS-7 — Pro Series desktop NVR family.
- 7-1-6 or 7-3-2 — channel count (16 or 32).
- NXI — AcuSense-capable IP NVR (the "X" denotes AI; the "I" is Hikvision's intelligent prefix).
- -K4 — K-series 4-bay (four 3.5" SATA HDDs).
- (D) — refreshed compliance-revision hardware. Same capability as the original K4 outside of country-specific component changes.
- /16P (when present) — adds 16 built-in PoE ports. The (D) we list here is non-PoE.
So DS-7716NXI-K4(D) means "Pro Series, 16-channel, AcuSense AI, 4-bay K-series, non-PoE, current hardware revision." Same logic gives you DS-7732NXI-K4(D) as the 32-channel sister product. Full Hikvision naming guidance is referenced in the DS-7716NXI-K4 product page on Hikvision Global.
Channel count and PoE — the headline difference
The 7716 records up to 16 IP cameras; the 7732 records up to 32. That is the single decision that drives nearly every other downstream choice. Channel licence is not field-upgradable — the silicon decides — so plan for camera additions before you specify the recorder.
Both the DS-7716NXI-K4(D) and DS-7732NXI-K4(D) variants we ship are non-PoE. Cameras connect over a customer-supplied PoE switch, dedicated PoE injector or local 12 V DC PSU. Hikvision still offers /16P PoE-built-in K-series variants in some markets, but UK trade stock at the K4 tier rotates around the (D) non-PoE SKUs because most installers spec a separate PoE switch for redundancy and easier fault isolation. If you specifically want a recorder with built-in PoE at 32-channel, the in-stock options are the DS-7732NXI-I4/16P/VPRO (16 PoE ports, AcuSeek) or the DS-7732NI-M4/24P (24 PoE ports, 32 MP).

Bandwidth and decoding capacity compared
Incoming bandwidth and decoding capacity scale with channel count. Incoming bandwidth defines the total camera bitrate the NVR can sustain across all channels; decoding capacity defines what it can play back on the local HDMI output at the same time.

What does 160 Mbps and 256 Mbps actually buy you?
Incoming bandwidth must exceed the sum of every camera's recording bitrate, all the time. Use this as a rough first-pass sizing rule:
- 4 MP H.265+ AcuSense camera at default bitrate: ~4 Mbps each.
- 8 MP (4K) H.265+ camera: ~8 Mbps each.
- 12 MP camera: ~12-16 Mbps each.
That puts the DS-7716NXI-K4 comfortably inside 16 × 4 MP cameras (~64 Mbps) or 16 × 8 MP cameras (~128 Mbps) at default profile, with headroom for short bursts. The DS-7732NXI-K4 covers 32 × 4 MP (~128 Mbps), 16-20 × 8 MP cameras at default profile, or up to ~256 Mbps total. If you are deploying 12 MP DS-2CD23126G3 turrets across all 32 channels you will run into the 256 Mbps ceiling — see "When you outgrow the K-series" below. For more on how the NVR decodes during live view, read our explainer on what decoding capability actually means.
Storage: how much footage will each hold?
Both NVRs ship with four 3.5-inch SATA bays — capacity differs only because of the per-drive ceiling. The DS-7716NXI-K4(D) is rated up to 16 TB per drive (64 TB total) and the DS-7732NXI-K4(D) is rated up to 10 TB per drive (40 TB total). In practice we ship most units with 4 TB-10 TB surveillance-grade hard drives.
Rough retention guidance at H.265+ default profile:
- 4 TB: ~30 days of 8 × 4 MP cameras at 4 Mbps with continuous recording.
- 10 TB: ~30 days of 16 × 4 MP at 4 Mbps, or ~14 days of 32 × 4 MP.
- 16 TB: ~30 days of 16 × 8 MP cameras at 8 Mbps with continuous recording.
If commissioning to UK GDPR retention targets of 30 days minimum, the 32-channel 7732 normally needs three or four drives populated; the 7716 will hit 30 days on two or three. Use Hikvision's HikStorage Calculator to firm up your numbers before ordering drives.
AcuSense AI on the K-series — what comes baked in
Both NVRs run Hikvision AcuSense AI to cut false alarms from motion-only triggers. The K-series ships with:
- Perimeter protection (line crossing, intrusion) with human / vehicle classification.
- Facial recognition: 1-channel facial recognition on a video stream OR 4-channel facial recognition on saved face pictures.
- Motion Detection 2.0 (target-classified motion).
- ANPR — AI by Camera when paired with an ANPR-capable Hikvision camera.
The face-recognition channel count is the same on both NVRs because it's a per-platform spec, not a per-channel one. If you need higher face capacity, you step up to the AcuSeek VPro or DeepinMind tier (see next section). For a deeper dive into how AcuSense, ColorVu and the rest of Hikvision's AI families interact, read the UK installer's guide to Hikvision AcuSense and the AcuSense NVR sizing guide.

When you outgrow the K-series: AcuSeek VPro and DeepinMind step-ups
If 12 MP recording or 256 Mbps incoming bandwidth becomes a constraint, two natural step-ups exist.
- DS-7732NXI-I4/16P/VPRO (AcuSeek VPro): 32-channel, 32 MP recording per channel, 384 Mbps incoming bandwidth, 16 built-in PoE ports, and Hikvision's Guanlan large multimodal AI model on board for AcuSeek text-based video search. You ask "white van near gate" and the NVR returns matching clips.
- DS-9632NXI-I8/VPRO: 32-channel non-PoE Ultra Series with eight SATA bays for very long retention or RAID, also AcuSeek-enabled.
- iDS-7716NXI-M4/X (DeepinMind): 16-channel DeepinMind variant with deeper face / ANPR / behaviour analytics if your project is 16-channel but specs richer AI than AcuSense.
The K4 NVRs remain Hikvision's go-to recorder for the 1-32 camera commercial bracket because they're proven, affordable, and run the same iVMS-4200 / Hik-Connect ecosystem as the upmarket boxes.
Wiring and power planning — when you need a PoE switch
Both the DS-7716NXI-K4(D) and DS-7732NXI-K4(D) are non-PoE — every camera needs its own power source. Three common topologies:
- Dedicated PoE switch (recommended for most installs). Pick a switch sized to camera count plus 25% headroom for future expansion. Our PoE switches from Reyee and Hikvision range from 8 to 48 ports.
- Per-camera PoE injectors. Useful for one-off runs or to colour-code maintenance per camera. More cable runs to the comms cabinet.
- Local 12 V DC PSU. For exterior cameras with mains nearby, or where Cat6 distance limits force fibre-converter / 12 V boxes in the field. PSU resilience is on you.
The dual Gigabit LAN ports on both NVRs let you isolate the camera network from the client LAN — best practice for commercial sites. Plug cameras into LAN 1, the client / iVMS / Hik-Connect traffic into LAN 2.
Decision matrix — pick by site size and camera type
| Site profile | Recommended NVR | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 9-16 cameras, mixed 4 MP / 8 MP, GDPR 30-day retention | DS-7716NXI-K4(D) | Plenty of bandwidth and storage headroom; smallest footprint at this tier. |
| 12-16 cameras, all 12 MP AcuSense turrets | DS-7716NXI-K4(D) | 160 Mbps absorbs a full 16-channel 12 MP load at default profile. |
| 17-28 cameras, mixed 4-8 MP | DS-7732NXI-K4(D) | 256 Mbps handles up to 32 × 8 MP with default bitrate. |
| 32 cameras, 12 MP across the board | DS-7732NXI-I4/16P/VPRO | 384 Mbps incoming + 32 MP recording + AcuSeek AI. |
| 25-32 cameras, need built-in PoE | DS-7732NI-M4/24P | 24 built-in PoE ports, 32 MP recording, no separate switch. |
| 16 channels, advanced face / ANPR / behaviour | iDS-7716NXI-M4/X | DeepinMind feature set above AcuSense. |

FAQ — installer questions about the K4 NVRs
Can I run all 16 cameras on the DS-7716NXI-K4 at 12 MP?
Yes — recording at 12 MP per channel is supported, and 16 × 12 MP at default H.265+ bitrate sits inside the 160 Mbps incoming ceiling. Where you may hit limits is local HDMI decoding (2-ch@12 MP) — most of the time you'd manage the multi-view at 1080p or 4 MP and pull single-channel review at full 12 MP when needed.
Does the K4 NVR support 4K ColorVu cameras?
Yes. Both the 7716 and 7732 record up to 12 MP per channel, so 4K (8 MP) ColorVu and AcuSense cameras are fully supported. The NVR runs Hikvision's standard channel-level config — full ColorVu and AcuSense feature parity is set on the camera, with the NVR consuming the H.265+ stream and AI metadata.
Do these NVRs support AcuSeek?
No — AcuSeek is exclusive to the AcuSeek VPro series (NXI-I4/VPRO and NXI-I8/VPRO variants). The K4 NVRs run standard AcuSense AI. If your customer needs text-based video search ("find the man in red near the loading bay"), step up to the DS-7732NXI-I4/16P/VPRO or DS-9632NXI-I8/VPRO.
What hard drives should I fit?
Use surveillance-grade SATA drives — Seagate SkyHawk or Western Digital Purple. Avoid desktop drives; their firmware isn't tuned for 24/7 write workloads. We can ship the NVR pre-configured with 1 TB-10 TB surveillance HDDs already installed and tested.
Do the K4 NVRs work with HiLook IP cameras?
Yes — HiLook IP cameras (the Hikvision-owned trade-tier brand) onboard cleanly onto Hikvision Pro K-series NVRs over the LAN. Add them via the iVMS-4200 device wizard or the NVR's local "Add IPC" workflow.
Can I mix the 7716 and 7732 on the same Hik-Connect account?
Yes. Hik-Connect handles multiple NVRs and DVRs under one account, so a multi-site customer with both a 7716 and a 7732 in stock rotation sees both devices in the same mobile and desktop client. Bind each unit with its serial number and verification code as usual.
How loud are these NVRs in a small comms cabinet?
The K4 desktop chassis runs at a moderate noise level — fine for a typical office comms rack or under-desk install, less ideal sitting on a reception desk. For quieter environments specify a separate equipment cupboard or wall-mounted enclosure.
