Ajax Fire Hub Jeweller EN 54 wireless fire alarm control panel UK installer guide
Ajax Fire Hub Jeweller — the EN 54-2/4/21/25 wireless control and indicating equipment at the heart of an Ajax commercial fire system.

What is the Ajax Fire Hub Jeweller?

The Ajax EN54 Fire Hub Jeweller is a wireless control and indicating equipment (CIE) panel that runs a complete commercial-grade fire alarm system over Ajax's Jeweller and Wings radio protocols. It is the first Ajax product certified to the full set of EN 54 standards a UK installer needs to put a wireless fire system into a commercial building. The panel is built around a 10.1-inch touchscreen and is supplied in two colourways — the Fire Hub Jeweller white (SKU 125732) and Fire Hub Jeweller black (SKU 125733).

Where the original Ajax Hub 2 Plus is a Grade 2 intruder panel that can host fire detectors as a side function, the Fire Hub Jeweller is the opposite: a fire-first panel that supports intrusion and video alongside fire on the same platform. For commercial fire jobs — care homes, schools, retail, light industrial, leisure — that distinction is what lets the system through Building Control and an NSI inspection.

Which EN 54 parts the Fire Hub Jeweller is certified to — and why each one matters

"EN 54-certified" is a label installers see thrown around loosely. The Ajax Fire Hub Jeweller is certified to four EN 54 parts — this is what each one is doing for you on a UK commercial job.

  • EN 54-2 — Control and indicating equipment. The standard the panel itself must meet: clear fault indication, manual silence, alarm zoning, evacuation control. Without it, the panel cannot be used as the CIE on a BS 5839-1 system.
  • EN 54-4 — Power supply equipment. Covers the panel's PSU and standby battery operation. Ajax's EN54 24h battery and EN54 72h battery options let you size the standby duration to category L1, L2 or P1 system class.
  • EN 54-21 — Alarm transmission and fault warning routing equipment. Onboard ATS to an alarm receiving centre. Ethernet plus 4G LTE gives Ajax the dual-path the standard expects without bolting on a separate transmitter.
  • EN 54-25 — Components using radio links. The big one: this is the part that lets every wireless detector, sounder, VAD, manual call point and I/O module on the system be treated as compliant fire alarm equipment, not "alarm gear we hope is OK". Many wireless panels on the market still cannot claim EN 54-25 across their full peripheral list.

BS 5839-1 is the UK code of practice; it does not certify products. The way a BS 5839-1 system gets its compliance is by being designed and installed using EN 54-certified equipment. The Ajax Fire Hub Jeweller is the first Ajax CIE that lets you do that wirelessly across the whole peripheral set, which is why it is genuinely new ground for UK installers (see the IET Wiring Matters commentary on BS 5839-1:2025 for the wider regulatory context).

Fire Hub white vs Fire Hub black: cosmetic only

The two SKUs differ only in housing colour. Internally, radio range, certification, mains input, battery slot, communicators and CPU are identical. Pick on aesthetics and on whether the wall it lives on is light or dark — do not budget for a "premium" black version. Both ship with the same 10.1" touchscreen and the same software image.

How to size the Ajax Fire Hub Jeweller for a UK commercial site

One Fire Hub Jeweller covers up to 200 devices, 40 zones and 80 rooms. In practice that maps to a wide range of UK commercial buildings without needing a second panel.

Site typeTypical device countHubs needed
Small office, 1 floor, < 500 m²15–301 Fire Hub Jeweller
Care home, 30 bed, 2 floors60–901 + 1–2 Fire ReX
Primary school, 3 blocks80–1401 + 2–3 Fire ReX
Retail unit + warehouse, 1,500 m²40–901 + 1–2 Fire ReX
Light industrial, 3,000 m²120–2001 + 2–4 Fire ReX
Above 200 devices or category L1 large200+2+ Fire Hubs — split by building or zone group

Where you outrun the 1,800 m radio range — long sites, heavy partitioning, basement plant — drop in a Fire ReX Jeweller (white) or Fire ReX Jeweller (black) range extender. Each Fire ReX adds another 1,800 m hop and is itself certified to EN 54-25 so it stays inside the compliance envelope.

Choosing the right FireProtect detectors

The FireProtect Jeweller range covers the four detection profiles BS 5839-1 calls out, each available with or without an integrated sounder so the installer can match the building's evacuation strategy without adding hardware.

The peripheral list a BS 5839-1 designer expects to see, all on Jeweller and all EN 54-25 certified.

Backup batteries: 24-hour vs 72-hour

EN 54-4 sets the standby duration the panel must support on battery alone. BS 5839-1 then specifies the duration required by category — 24 hours for most L and M systems, 72 hours where the site cannot be reliably attended at the start of business each day. Ajax ships two compatible packs.

Both packs slot inside the hub housing — there is no separate enclosure to mount, no battery cabinet to terminate, and no end-of-line resistor calculations.

How the Ajax Fire Hub Jeweller compares to traditional wired panels

The headline argument for going wireless on a commercial fire job is install time and disturbance. The longer argument is that the Fire Hub Jeweller actually closes the gap on what installers used to give up by going wireless — addressability, panel-side configuration, ARC reporting, and PSU compliance.

AspectTraditional wired loop panelAjax Fire Hub Jeweller

The take-away: for the kind of UK commercial site where a wired install used to be the only credible answer — care home refurbishment, occupied office, listed building, school holiday window — the Fire Hub Jeweller now closes the certification gap that previously forced a wired panel.

Commissioning workflow

Ajax PRO commissioning logic translates straight from intruder onto fire, which is what makes the Fire Hub Jeweller fast on a real install. The workflow:

  1. Mount the panel on the GlandBox (or directly to the wall) and energise the 110 - 240 V AC supply.
  2. Insert the 24h or 72h battery pack and verify both PSUs report healthy on the panel touchscreen.
  3. Open Ajax PRO Desktop or the PRO mobile app, create the site, attach the Fire Hub Jeweller via QR code.
  4. Add detectors, sounders, VADs, manual call points and I/O modules in mention order — each gets a unique Jeweller ID.
  5. Group devices into fire zones (max 40) and rooms (max 80). Configure category L / M / P evacuation logic via the 64 automation scenarios.
  6. Run a full walk test from the panel touchscreen — the panel logs every alarm to the PRO app for the BS 5839-1 commissioning certificate.
  7. Issue user access via the Ajax Security System app for the building's responsible person; route alarms to the ARC over the EN 54-21 communicators.

Where the Fire Hub Jeweller fits — and where it doesn't

Use the Fire Hub Jeweller for: small to medium commercial fire jobs, occupied buildings, refurbishments, sites that need fire and intruder on one platform, and any site where a wired loop is impractical or destructive. Do not use it for: BS 5839-1 category L1 systems above 200 devices on a single panel, sites that require an EN 54-13-certified addressable loop, or jobs where the specifier has explicitly written "wired loop only".

If you also need to run intruder detection on the same Ajax platform, the design pattern is one Fire Hub Jeweller for the fire system and a separate Hub2 Plus white or Ajax Hub2 Kit 3 for intruder, both reporting to the same PRO Desktop and the same ARC. We covered the two-platform strategy in detail in our Ajax fire and intruder compliance guide, and the wider EN 54 system architecture in the Ajax EN54 complete installer guide.

Installer FAQ

Is the Ajax Fire Hub Jeweller approved for BS 5839-1 systems in the UK?
The Fire Hub Jeweller is certified to EN 54-2, EN 54-4, EN 54-21 and EN 54-25, which are the parts BS 5839-1 calls out for the panel, its PSU, alarm transmission and radio components. A correctly designed and commissioned system using the Fire Hub Jeweller and the FireProtect peripheral range can be presented as BS 5839-1 compliant.

How many devices can one Fire Hub Jeweller support?
Up to 200 wireless devices, organised into a maximum of 40 fire zones and 80 rooms, with up to 64 automation scenarios for evacuation and plant control.

What is the wireless range of the Ajax Fire Hub Jeweller?
Up to 1,800 metres hub-to-device in open space on the Jeweller and Wings radio protocols. Use a Fire ReX Jeweller range extender for outbuildings, basements, or sites with heavy partitioning.

Does the Fire Hub Jeweller need a separate ARC dialler?
No. The panel's Ethernet plus optional 4G LTE communicators are certified to EN 54-21, so the dual transmission path is built in.

Can the same panel handle fire and intruder?
The Fire Hub Jeweller will host intrusion and video devices, but UK practice for commercial installs is to keep fire on its own panel for service and maintenance reasons. Pair the Fire Hub Jeweller with a Hub2 Plus for intruder as documented in the Ajax EN54 installer guide.

How long does the backup battery last?
The 24h battery (7.4 V / 5 Ah) covers a typical staffed L or M category site; the 72h battery (7.4 V / 10 Ah) is used where the building cannot be attended within 24 hours of a mains failure.

Where can I order the Ajax Fire Hub Jeweller in the UK?
